The Evansville Kindness Club has received national recognition in the "American Profile" magazine and was featured in the "On the Road With Jason Davis". Barb Bratvold started the Kindness club in 1995 when her fourth-grade students decided to make get-well cards for a retired schoolteacher who became ill shortly after visiting their class. A thank-you letter to the class created a dialogue on how good it felt to help others. The students asked to make more cards and after a class meeting, the establishment of the Evansville 4th Grade Kindness Club resulted. From there it has blossomed to 48,500 cards to those ill, lonely, or suffering from a loss of loved one or tragedy.
The Kindness Club has had some major endeavors through the years including helping victims of the flood in Ada in 97, tornado in Comfrey in 98, and the tsunami in Japan. Many fundraisers for individuals as well as organizations have been completed through the years. Their motto "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is one that hopefully Mrs. Bratvold's students will keep for their lifetime.
The Kindness Club received a book Have You Filled a Bucket today? from a recipient of their cards. The book tells how everyone carries an invisibile bucket that holds your good thoughts and feelings about yourself. When your bucket is full, you feel happy, but when your bucket is empty you feel very sad. We can all fill other people's bucket by being kind to them. The Kindness Club members are bucket fillers!
